May is preservation month
Historic Preservation is celebrated during the month of May with activities taking place in cities and towns throughout Massachusetts. In Lowell, the Lowell Historic Board hosts the annual Doors Open Lowell program, offering interior access to many historic buildings typically closed to the public. http://www.doorsopenlowell.org/ The Waterfront Historic Area League in New Bedford has put together a display of past and present preservation work. http://www.waterfrontleague.org/events/ The Newburyport Preservation Trust's activities include themed events relating to the role of women in preservation as well as lectures, walking tours and the annual preservation awards. http://www.nbptpreservationtrust.org/ In the city of Springfield, the Springfield Preservation Trust is hosting a tour of five carriage houses and early garages. http://springfieldpreservationtrust.org/ For more ideas on how your community can celebrate Preservation Month, visit the National Trust for Historic Preservation's website at:

PRESERVATION MONTH IN THE CITY OF BOSTON
The Boston Landmarks Commission is celebrating National Historic Preservation Month this May. The theme of this year's event is Sustaining Boston's Past, Old Places, New Ideas. The City of Boston will host a variety of activities for everyone, including walking tours, presentations on how to green older homes, and special events. The month-long series kicks off Thursday, May 2. Mayor Thomas M. Menino will be joined by a panel of experts for "Old Houses, New Energy, a presentation highlighting how homeowners can conserve energy in their older homes. Residents are invited to learn how to save money by making old houses energy efficient while preserving historic character and value. Presentations will include information on energy audits, tuning up old windows, solar energy installations, weatherization and other energy savings strategies for older homes. The event will take place from 6-8 PM at the main branch of the Boston Public Library, 700 Boylston Street. The City's second keynote event, "Better with Age: Greening Historic Commercial Buildings," on May 23 will highlight how the Hayden Building, Boston Hostel, and 5 Channel Center have all been sustainably adapted for 21st century commercial use. Join members of the projects' design and development teams for a look at how to navigate LEED certification, historic tax credits, and energy efficient design. The event will take place from 6-8 PM at the BSA Space, Atlantic Wharf, 290 Congress Street. STATEWIDE HISTORIC PRESERVATION CONFERENCE
The Massachusetts Historic Preservation Conference will be held in Lexington, October 18. The conference is being organized by the Preservation Coalition, a group of nineteen preservation organizations across the state and will include workshops for those new to historic preservation, professional practitioners and everyone in between. Please plan to send representatives from your community to take advantage of a full day of panel discussions, presentations, and case studies of successful preservation projects from around the state. Notification of registration on the conference's web-site will be sent via this e-newsletter.
