I would suggest that in your posting for the meeting you indicate that informed comments and opinions will be considered;  in writing by (a convenient date,) or verbally at the meeting. 
It is also possible that a consultant could be retained with a background in preservation. it may be late for this; is there a time constraint?

The Mendon Historical Commission is having a hearing to determine if a building should be preferably preserved.  This hearing is a first for the HC.  What criteria do other commissions use to determine if a building should be preferably preserved?
