Hi,
In the spirit of Dennis De Witt's Window Contractor List, I am starting a list of lumber resources in the MA area, specifically for naturally rot resistant lumber and mill-work. The mills I've listed below are small mills with local timber but if people can add other sources for less regional species such as Liberty Cedar (who deliver in MA) and Downes & Reader that is great also. Also, any thoughts on how/where to post this list?
Below are mills I rely on for rot resistant sills and deck framing. Typically we use black locust or white oak (with no sapwood) which is less expensive than P.T for heavy timbers. These can be graded and the code says "equivalent" so check with the Building Commissioner/Inspector. Generally there is some crossover with suppliers of boat building lumber. I am sure there are lots of other mills I'd love to hear about...
As they say in N.H.," black locust rots slower than granite": I am not convinced Azek is the only alternative.
Thanks,
David Ottinger
Black Locust:
1. "The Wood Guy" Matt House, sawyer. Raymond, N.H. (603) 793-1515. Has the logs to mill out.
2.
Rand Lumber, N.H. recently went out of business. These mills should be supported. I got most of my black locust sills there
last year. A cool old-fashioned lumber mill.
3. Jim Aaron, near Orange. Also has really
nice tight grained pine. He just provided some locust
for a client of mine. He tends to not want to use his primo stuff for
sills...
"Shutesbury, Massachusetts. Always
cutting white oak for boatbuilders. No answering machine, so if they
aren't at home you have to keep trying.

4.Pricey but they always have it:
Roberts Brothers Lumber Company, Inc

White Oak (avoid Red Oak):
1.
C & M Rough Cut (the answering machine is worth the call). He custom cuts white oak sills. Reasonably priced. He tends to sell the
stuff fast, but gets it in frequently; you have to check in a few times.

2. Gurney's Sawmill, Inc. Just provided us with white oak timbers up to 20'- 11" by 11". Also have pine.
8 Gurney Rd East Freetown, MA 02717

3.
Parlee Lumber. They may already have some pre-cut or they'll cut it out custom
and always seem to have large white oak logs. Also a good source for
pine lumber- shorts are well priced- and they let you pick for clear and
quality.
