For those of you who responded last year to the Federal DOT supporting an exemption for historic street name signs, I thought I'd pass along a policy vote adopted tonight by Brookline's Board of Selectmen re the Town’s historic cast aluminum signs:

1T". . . Local Historic Districts created under Chapter 40C of the Massachusetts General Laws, Neighborhood Conservation Districts, National Register Districts and National Register-eligible districts as determined by the Preservation Commission acting as a Certified Local Government, are “locally recognized historic districts” within the option paragraph of Section 2D.43 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices for Streets and Highways, exempting such historic signs from MUTCD standards, as provided in Federal Register, Vol. 77, No. 93 (May 14, 2012), at 28464-28465.

Signs in Local Historic Districts shall be subject in all respects to Preservation Commission LHD design guidelines, including restoration, and signs in Neighborhood Conservation Districts shall in all respects be subject to applicable NCD guidelines, if any. Such historic signs will not be evaluated with respect to any MUTCD standards applicable to other signs.

Existing historic signs in all locally recognized historic districts shall be retained and maintained, and historic signs outside of any such districts shall be maintained as historic objects subject to any non-reparable losses, and supplemented as may be required by signs meeting MUTCD standards."

Again, thanks for your support. We wouldn't have gotten here without it.
