During Preservation Month, the Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) invites you to step into history and learn about the agency's work to preserve the Commonwealth's heritage under this year's theme, Stories In Stone. Visit Plymouth Rock and the 1921 McKim, Mead and White portico, rehabilitated in 2009 and recipient of a Massachusetts Historic Commission Preservation Award. See work in progress at Borderland State Park where a stone mansion and rock garden are coming back to life, or get a tour of Fort Independence in Boston. Explore the soapstone quarry at Harold Parker State Forest, find traces of farmsteads deep in the woods in Hawley, or walk atop an engineering marvel at the Wachusett dam. These preserved places help tell our shared history.

As one of the state's oldest and most active preservation organizations, DCR is steward to 12,000 years of human history, nearly ½ million acres of land, and 2,000 cultural resources including 100+ National Register-listed properties and 8 National Historic Landmarks. Visit our website to see the complete DCR Preservation Month program: http://www.mass.gov/dcr/.
