Dr. Larson,
I am unaware of any collection of plans from the office of Stephen Earle,
having tried myself in the past to find one. Some individual plans can be
found in the collections of different libraries, but I believe that the
contents of Earle's office did not survive.

It may or may not be of interest to you that Professor Curtis Dahl,
deceased, formerly of Wheaton College, did a lot of research on Stephen Earle and
produced a never-published manuscript on Earle and his work, a copy of
which I own. I was in touch with him when he was doing that research, back in
the 1980s. At that time no collection of plans from Earle's office was
known to exist. Earle's grandson, Albert Southwick, who lives in Worcester
and who is himself a historian, was not aware of any comprehensive
collection of Earle's drawings.

The Massachusetts Office of Public Safety records at the Massachusetts
Archives might have some plans for the building you are interested in. You
might also check with the Worcester Historical Museum library (Robyn Conroy,
librarian) to see if they have acquired drawings of interest to you since I
last looked at their holdings. The Worcester Historical Museum did a show
on the work of Stephen Earle back in the 1980s and there is a catalogue for
the show, but that is not what you are looking for. Other possible
locations to check for plans are the Worcester Public Library (Joy Hennig, local
history room librarian) and the American Antiquarian Society in Worcester
(Lauren Hewes, graphics archivist).

I hope this helps,

If you haven’t checked MassCOPAR you can google them and get a link via
Open Source to listings of architects, drawings etc. that MassCOPAR
catalogued.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Architect Stephen C. Earle files

Preserve UMass is interested in learning where the files and plans of
architect Stephen C. Earle (1839-1913) of Worcester may have been archived. He
designed over 70 public buildings and residences in the Worcester area and
in other parts of Massachusetts. We are specifically interested to learn
if the original plans of the 1885 Old Chapel on the UMass Amherst campus
have survived. Any help or suggestions would be most appreciated.
