[MassHistPres] Fence design guidelines

In Cambridge's Old Cambridge (40C) Historic District the Commission evaluates fence designs for their architectural compatibility with the property - no guidelines involved except a long-held determination to keep fences low and relatively transparent along the sidewalk.

In some of our neighborhood conservation districts, fences lower than 4' in front of the front wall plane of the house, and no more than 6' elsewhere on the property, are permitted as of right - no design review involved. Nonconforming fences are reviewed as above.

Subject: Re: [MassHistPres] Fence design guidelines

Can anyone point me to guidelines that would be useful in evaluating an application for a Certificate of Appropriateness for a new fence on a contributing property in a local historic district? I would be grateful.
