Hi Everyone, perhaps someone out there can help me with this=2E Next week, =
the town will decide whether or not to approve money that ultimately would b=
e used for dredging the Mill Pond in West Tisbury=2E It is one of the Origin=
al properties in the WTHD, and the HDC and WTHDC are in favor of dredging i=
t to keep it from filling in and turning to marsh=2E It has been dredged per=
iodically in the past=2E The pond is symbolic of the founding of the town, a=
nd is on the town seal of incorporation=2E The community built up around it,=
and the mill associated with it, which is on the National Register=2E=20
There is a movement afoot in the town to remove the dam and let the pond rev=
ert to a stream, since that's what is was a century or two=2E The state wild=
life dept is in favor of removing all manmade ponds, and they have been here=
in support of that=2E=20
I was looking for examples of other historic man made ponds that have great =
significance to the towns they are located in, and curious as to whether or =
not they require maintenance=2E I was esp curious about Walden Pond, I under=
stand it is natural, a kettle hold, but has it required main thence? Dredgin=
g?=20
All info appreciated=2E Although the town probably cannot allow the dam to b=
e destroyed, they could certainly remove the boards that control the water l=
evel, amounting to the same thing more or less=2E=20
Thank you=2E=20

Sometime in the 19th c=2E, in Arlington (then West Cambridge) a farmer named=
Hill dammed a small stream and built a pond to water his cattle=2E Ar=
ound the end of the 19th c=2E the Town took Hill's Pond and many surrounding=
acres to create Menotomy Rocks Park=2E The pond was dredged some year=
s ago, and needs annual treatment for invasive plants=2E All this is i=
n the Town budget, and considered non-controversial=2E

John Worden
=
