LOCAL HISTORIC PLAQUE PROGRAMS IN MASSACHUSETTS
A historic plaque program is an excellent way to raise the interest and understanding of historic buildings located in your city or town in partnership with property owners. Many communities in Massachusetts have already established such a plaque program, with many positive results. Typical plaques include the date of construction (such as circa 1833) and the historic name (such as the John H. Chipman House). The standardized plaques are usually constructed out of wood or metal and are placed on the façade of the building in a location that can be viewed by the public. Plaque programs are usually administered by the local historical commission, local historical society or other local preservation organization. In a community with an active historic plaque program, the property owner of a historic building interested in a historic plaque fills out an application to the local organization. In reviewing the application, the local organization makes sure that the date of construction can be verified and also that the property retains historic integrity. If the local organization finds that the property deserves a historic plaque, a standardized plaque is ordered. In most communities, the property owner pays a fee to cover the cost of manufacturing the plaque. Historic plaques provide a sense of pride to property owners, unify historic areas and educate the public about local historic resources.
