This program will include a presentation outliningthe elements of a good disaster preparedness plan, followed by a paneldiscussion with representatives of organizations that have disaster plansalready in force: Ranger Chuck Arning, National Park Service; PaulaArtal-Isbrand, Objects Conservator, Worcester Art Museum; Babette Gehnrich,Head Conservator (books and paper); who will discuss the ins and outs ofplanning and plan management.

Following the 2011 tornado in western Massachusettsand Superstorm Sandy in 2012, it became clear, statewide, that many culturalinstitutions and organizations had no plan for how to respond to an unexpecteddisaster. The unfortunate loss of landmark buildings and irreplaceablemuseum and library collections emphasized the value of planning ahead.

It is difficult to imagine that a fire, flood, or hurricane couldever happen here, but disaster can strike anywhere – and unexpectedly. Planning ahead offers quicker access to emergency resources, services, andtechnical assistance, which can make the difference between the preservationand loss of historic buildings, valuable collections, archives, andartifacts.

Our speaker, GregorTrinkaus-Randall, is trained in disaster preparedness and response. A member of the Massachusetts Board ofLibrary Commissioners, he is a specialist in the preservation of library andarchival materials. As co-chairman of COSTEP MA (CoordinatedStatewide Emergency Preparedness in Massachusetts),he has worked to develop a statewide emergency response framework for culturalresources in the event of a disaster.

COSTEP MA is a collaborative of representatives ofcultural and historical institutions and agencies, as well as first responderand emergency management professionals from federal, state, and municipalgovernments.
