Dear NPT Members & Friends:
Last week the Newburyport Zoning Board of Appeals --- sympathetic to
preservation but bound by current codes --- approved a special permit for
construction of a new nonconforming structure at 17 Ship Street. This
approval cleared the way for the demolition of a home that has been part of
the South End neighborhood's streetscape since about 1750. (The owners had
waited-out the one-year demolition delay imposed by the Newburyport
Historical Commission.)
A sliver of hope for the preservation of this house remains. The owners are
offering the small unpretentious house with the captain's staircase to
anyone who would like to move it or disassemble it and reconstruct it
elsewhere. If you or anyone you know is interested in this authentic
18th-century post-and-beam house, contact Everett Chandler at 978-270-8626.
Please help save this early Newburyport building by spreading the word.
Thanks.
