Ann,
The Canton Historical Commission has experience in the trials and  
tribulations of fund raising.  While municipal boards and  commissions have 
non-profit status they do not qualify as 501 (c) (3)  non-profits. Thus we are not 
eligible to apply to the many charitable  foundations that are restricted to 
only giving to the 501 (c)(3)  organizations.  However, many banks have 
charitable giving programs  that do not have such a restriction.  I suggest 
inquiring of your town  financial director which banks the town does business 
with.  The  Historical Commission is one of the North Attleboro municipal 
agencies that  has a "relationship" with those banks.
 
In the 2012 Presidential election Canton was finally able to pass the  
Community Preservation Act and those monies are a source of funding for historic 
 preservation.  The Historical Commission has submitted a proposal for  
funding a project to our Community Preservation Committee, which they have  
recommended for this year's town meeting.  Of course, it will be up to the  
voters to approve our proposal, but CPA funds are a very good source for  
historic preservation projects.
