NEW PRESERVATION NON PROFIT ORGANIZATION IN FALMOUTH

A new non-profit dedicated to historic preservation was formed earlier this month in the town of Falmouth. As its name suggests, the Falmouth Preservation Alliance seeks to build a network and constituency to further historic preservation efforts. Over the past several years in Falmouth, prominent historic resources have either been demolished or threatened with demolition. In response, a group of preservationists chose to form a non-profit organization to take a more proactive stance. Through advocacy, connecting homeowners with appropriate contractors, working with realtors and reaching out to developers, the alliance hopes to see additional historic buildings rehabilitated, either continuing in their historic uses or adaptively re-used for new purposes. Falmouth is not alone in recognizing the benefit of a separate non-profit organization. Several cities and towns in Massachusetts have local historic preservation non-profit organizations dedicated to historic preservation such as Boston, Dartmouth, Nantucket, New Bedford, Newburyport, Salem, Springfield and Worcester. Historic Salem, Inc was established in 1944. Local historic preservation non-profit organizations fill a gap in local communities that local historical commissions cannot fill. As a membership organization, the historic preservation constituency of a non-profit organization can grow and have a strong, collective voice. Local non-profit organizations also offer new opportunities for fundraising, events, workshops, programs, advocacy and education.
