Culminating an eight year effort, yesterday the Secretary of the Interior designated the Brookline Reservoir of Boston’s Cochituate Aqueduct on Route 9 and its 1848 Terminal Gatehouse a National Historic Landmark. Brookline has two other NHLs, the JKF Birthplace and the F.L. Olmsted office at Fairsted

The 15 mile long Cochituate Aqueduct was Boston’s first municipal water supply, which made possible the development of the Back Bay and eventually enabled Boston's growth through multiple annexations.

The 1848 Brookline Gatehouse has the oldest extant iron roof structure in the U.S. and the oldest extant iron staircases intended for public use.

The 60+ page nomination is at http://www.nps.gov/nhl/news/LC/spring2014/Brookline.pdf
