Elizabeth,
There are atleast two c.1890s school houses in Boston(one in Brighton, one in Mattapan) that were converted into market rate apartments/condos. The Brighton Based School I believe is National Register and the foot print and exterior appears to be original. The Mattapan Based one, retains its exterior but is greatly expanded to add on more apartments. Brighton has a third ex school house that is now a three family house in private hands. All three are wood frame buildings.
There are two more in Roslindale that are 1920s era buildings that are also an apartment. I am not sure if its public or private ownership

Subject: [MassHistPres] Re-use of Victorian Italianate School

All,

I am wondering if there are examples out there of any community re-using historic school buildings.
The Town of Dracut has a wonderful 1860s school building that needs a new use. It’s about 7000 square feet, a modest size and is centrally located.
The goal is to preserve it and get it back on the tax rolls in another use.

Thank you for any thoughts and ideas that you may have.

Betsy Ware
Director of Community Development
Town of Dracut, MA.
