A group striving to save the historic "Little Red Schoolhouse" from
demolition, scheduled for mid-2016, is seeking sources of financial
assistance. The building, initially called Amherst Day School, is on the
Amherst College campus and was erected in 1937 as a preschool serving
children of both the college faculty and the community at large. It was
designed by the architectural firm, McKim, Mead and White, specifically for
the educational needs of toddler-sized children, with windows and plumbing
fixtures at childs' height, finely crafted wooden cubbies for belongings,
and benches built into the perimeter of the main classroom. The principal
architect was James Kellum Smith, a McKim, Mead & White partner whose other
works include the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History. There
is a Wikipedia article describing the building at
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Little_Red_Schoolhouse_(Amherst,_Massachusetts
). The College is willing to have the building moved from their campus.
