It is a fact of history, accepted by the general public, that the Town of
Westport does own a few historic buildings and sites. The issue of whether
or not the Town of Westport *should*, as a matter of principle, own
historic buildings has never been debated in a public forum, to my
knowledge. There has been discussion about selling some Town-owned
historic properties in the past, mainly in the context of filling a budget
deficit.
Most Town-owed historic buildings are public buildings that have been
around for a long time, going through various incarnations and uses. Some
former school buildings that merit historic designation have been sold over
the years as the school system consolidated in the early 20th century. In
the recent past, one important Town-owned historic property was leased to
others with historic preservation conditionalities, but not sold outright.
Town-owned historical buildings and sites that are listed on the Town's
Historic Inventory are eligible for funding for historic preservation work
via the CPA program, with those projects subject to review by the Westport
Historical Commission.
