MassDevelopment and the Massachusetts Downtown Initiative (MDI) at DHCD announce:
Design Guidelines and Lighting in Your Downtown
Design guidelines and lighting are major components to revitalizing and maintaining a vibrant downtown. Steve Cecil, of the Cecil Group<http://www.cecilgroup.com/>,
will provide case studies and examples of design guidelines that have been applied for a range of community scales and circumstances, ranging from historic preservation
to new urbanist town centers and the challenges of mixed-scale, mixed-use and layered architectural styles that typify most of our communities in Massachusetts.
The presentations and discussion will consider:
* Establishing and applying advisory design guidelines
* Crafting and applying obligatory design standards through special zoning and other methods
* Establishing the appropriate level of detail, control and flexibility
* Drafting user-friendly guidelines
The appearance and experience of downtowns and town centers shifts in the evening. This portion of the workshop will focus on the significant benefits associated
with a thoughtful approach to lighting of the civic realm and the private sector shops, buildings and sites that compose a district. Professionals that have implemented
significant lighting programs for urban and commercial development will cover the following topics:
* Choosing streetlights and understanding different technologies, fixtures and their relative costs and benefits including emerging energy management systems.
* Establishing appropriate lighting levels for streets and sidewalks
* Regulating animated signs and LED displays
* Creating feature lighting with bollards, spotlighting and innovative LED applications
* Protecting the night sky through policies and technologies
* Focusing lighting on monuments and architecture, including what works and what does not
* Considering public art that incorporates lighting
* Designing and implementing great holiday lighting
