Dear Colleagues,
As many of you know, May is National Historic Preservation Month. To
celebrate and to promote Boston’s history, architecture, archaeology and
historic neighborhoods the Boston Landmarks Commission, on behalf of Mayor
Martin J. Walsh and the City of Boston, will again produce a calendar of
local events taking place during the month. The aim of the Preservation
Month calendar is to promote the extraordinary work that many Boston
organizations have undertaken to preserve the city’s history and
architecture, and to expose a wider, more diverse audience to historic
preservation and history-related activities taking place in Boston. The
theme of the 2016 city celebration is “Keep the Change.”
Calendar details
We would like to expand on the success of the past few years by featuring a
broad range of events and activities. The calendar will be made available
in digital format (PDF) in April. A postcard announcement will be followed
by a hard copy calendar. We encourage all participating groups to post the
calendar online and brand May events as “Preservation Month” activities. We
also encourage contributors to adapt events to this year’s theme.
What types of events qualify for inclusion?
Any May 2016 event related to historic preservation, local history,
historic architecture or landscapes, neighborhood revitalization and
archaeology – anything that celebrates Boston’s history or built heritage.
The calendar is limited to events taking place in Boston. Please note that
due to the high number of event submissions anticipated, events that repeat
throughout the month will be placed in a separate section of this year’s
calendar.
Submission deadline and requirements
To submit a calendar event for Preservation Month, please complete the
provided Calendar Event Submission Form and return it to Tonya Loveday,
Assistant Survey Director (tonya.loveday at boston.gov) by Friday, March 4. If
you already have event listings published on your website or in a paper
calendar or brochure, we can take your event listings directly from that
source, provided it includes all pertinent information. The submission of a
digital image related to your event is highly encouraged. Please provide
image credits for inclusion in our distribution materials. The Boston
Landmarks Commission reserves the right to edit all entries and photographs
for consistency and to determine if any entries may not be appropriate to
the purpose of the calendar.
We look forward to celebrating Preservation Month with you! If you have any
questions about the calendar please contact Tonya Loveday.
