MHC WORKSHOP-HISTORIC PRESERVATION: WITH OR WITHOUT A LOCAL HISTORIC DISTRICT
This Massachusetts Historical Commission workshop is designed to explain the regulatory and non-regulatory approaches to historic preservation typically used at the local level. Historic preservation efforts at the local level often try to focus exclusively on regulatory means, such as a local historic district, to achieve desired results. However, with a high bar to pass, this approach is limiting, time-consuming and, in the end, too often not successful. Local historical commissions and other local groups interested in protecting historic resources will find far more success if they develop a balanced approach, unique to their community, based on a wide range of effective tools. It is hoped that, through this workshop, local preservationists will recognize the benefits of a realistic, cooperative and comprehensive approach. Local historical commission members are encouraged to attend as well as anyone interested understanding the basic techniques of historic preservation. This new MHC workshop will be presented in cooperation with the Central Massachusetts Regional Planning Commission in Worcester on September 22, 2016 at 5:30pm. For more information, contact Assistant Planner, Derrick Mathieu at dmathieu at cmrpc.org<https://owa.sec.state.ma.us/OWA/redir.aspx?C=ae3f394d457f4aba87fdcaccc99103f0&URL=mailto%3admathieu%40cmrpc.org>.

MHC WORKSHOP-INTRODUCTION TO HISTORIC PRESERVATION PLANNING
This workshop provides an overview of the basic steps of community-wide historic preservation planning including identifying, evaluating and protecting historic resources. New local historical commission members will find the program especially useful although all local historical commission members are encouraged to attend, as well as anyone interested understanding the basic techniques for protecting historic resources in their community. The workshop will be held September 13, 2016 at 7pm in Chelmsford at the Center for the Arts.

SCALING UP: NEW STRATEGIES FOR LANDSCAPE-SCALE CONSERVATION
In response to the impacts of globalization, climate change, and environmental degradation, conservationists, resource stewards, and public officials are embracing a much larger, whole ecosystem approach to conserving land and its attendant historic and cultural attributes. This emerging approach requires building complex networks of partnerships and overlapping jurisdictions which work in concert to conserve the natural, historical, and cultural resources of the regional landscape. Organized by Essex Heritage and hosted by the PEM/Peabody Essex Museum, the symposium is designed for natural, historical, and cultural resource professionals such as municipal officials, regional and local planners, state agency staff, nonprofit resource stewards, and college faculty. The symposium will be held October 7, 2016 from 8:00am - 5:00pm at the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, MA.
