I thought this upcoming event might be of interest to some list members. Halloween season is over, safe to come to Salem again! Best, Michael

In conjunction with its current exhibition of little known Salem artist Quentin Oliver Jones (1903-1999), the Salem Athenaeum is offering guided tours this weekend November 11 and 12 of the artist’s intact studio in his ancestral home, a substantially preserved three-story Federal building dating to ca. 1808. A chance to visit a remarkable residence in the McIntire Historic District and to see the work and domestic settings and creative output of Jones, the inspired, reclusive great-grandson of a Salem sea captain. Saturday and Sunday 11/11 and 11/12, 10-3. Space is limited and pre-registration is required.

“Enjoy a special opportunity to experience the environment in which Salem artist Quinton Oliver Jones created his fantastical paintings. A guided tour of his former home, also an historic architectural gem in its own right, will include his workspace and many more paintings. This is a rare opportunity not to be missed! The paintings of Quinton Oliver Jones occupy a vividly imaginative space. Swirling landscapes inhabited by human and animal figures, codes and symbols, evoke dreams or fairy tales where anything can happen. His inventive use of colors outside of nature to describe the natural world turns landscapes into dreamscapes, often with a vibrating, sometimes eerie glow. The human characters often seem at the mercy of whimsical, hybrid animal creatures that rule the canvases, adding a psychological element.” The Salem Athenaeum, 337 Essex Street, Salem MA 01970, tel 978.744.2540 | fax 978.744.7536 Info at SalemAthenaeum.net<mailto:Info at SalemAthenaeum.net>
