ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Preservation Administrator is responsible for assisting with the administration of Cambridge's two historic districts, four Neighborhood Conservation Districts (NCDs), and 65 individually designated properties. The administrator will have sole responsibility for the administration of two NCDs. Supporting the Director and the Preservation Planner, the Preservation Administrator's responsibilities include:

  *   provide procedural guidance and staff support to NCD commissions;
  *   advise homeowners, contractors, developers, and architects on regulatory issues; and
  *   research Cambridge history, property ownership, and historic uses.
  *   process applications for alterations to designated properties;
  *   schedule public hearings;
  *   prepare time-sensitive notifications to applicants and abutters;
  *   photograph subject properties and compile PowerPoint presentations;
  *   take notes and produce minutes of NCD meetings;
  *   prepare certificates and findings;
  *   review compliance with Commission actions;
  *   monitor and update the city's online permitting system; and
  *   undertake related tasks as directed.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  *   A Master's degree in historic preservation, public administration, or urban planning, or a Bachelor's degree in historic preservation or a closely related field, plus two years of full-time experience in preservation practice. The successful candidate will be knowledgeable about preservation laws and procedures and able to communicate effectively orally and in writing with architects, contractors, developers, building owners, supervisors, employees, and the general public.
  *   Excellent research and writing abilities, a high level of organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  *   A practical understanding of building fabric and an ability to 'read' historic structures
  *   Experience reading and interpreting architectural plans.
  *   Experience compiling architectural inventory forms and National Register nominations.
  *   Familiarity with PCs and related software, particularly Microsoft Office programs. Ability to assist in maintaining web content and GIS skills are also desirable.
  *   Valid driver's license preferred.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: Hand-eye coordination is necessary to operate computers and various pieces of office equipment, including copy machine, printers, and a folding machine.  Ability to negotiate obstacles such as staircases and scaffolds and to visit sites throughout Cambridge without assistance. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. WORK ENVIRONMENT:     Work is performed primarily in office settings, but outdoor work is required in the photography and inspection of properties and construction sites.
RATE: $44,315-$68,507 + excellent benefits
