I am writing to ask if anyone knows of early cooking hearths that are extant and intact or restored to their former original state.
The kitchen/gathering room in our 1762 Akin House had a ca. 1830s Greek Revival fireplace which was built in front of a larger more expansive cooking hearth with the wall oven to the left rear of the firebox. The later Greek Revival style fireplace included a cupboard above the mantel to the right with a non functional beehive oven below and a storage bin below the oven. Cooking hearths evolved to much smaller fireplaces over time. There are two other fireplaces in this house. These are being repaired and repointed. 

We have always suspected that a larger “original” fireplace was hidden behind the one built a little later.  We uncovered it and are in the process of restoring it. It’s spectacular! 
The Akin House is one of the oldest houses in Dartmouth. It is Town-owned and DHPT has been under a leasehold agreement with the town since 2008. DHPT operates as its stewards and directs its preservation and restoration efforts.
