Historic New England is hosting a new conference, Preserving Affordability, Affording Preservation - Prospects for Historic Multi-family Housing<http://shop.historicnewengland.org/HH-SYMPOSIUM-10909/>, on Friday, April 27, 2018, at the landmark All Saints' Episcopal Church, 209 Ashmont Street, Boston, Mass. The program convenes leading advocates in affordable housing and historic preservation to examine the past, present, and future of our region's historic multi-family housing.
Historic multi-family buildings, such as New England's iconic three-deckers, once served as "gateway" housing for many, providing affordable options for renters as well as a path to home ownership. Can these historically affordable buildings be adapted to meet current needs, or will they be replaced with newer forms of housing? Can we preserve affordability in our housing stock while also preserving historic building types, neighborhood character, and urban density?
Presentations and panels include scholars and practitioners in the areas of urban planning, historic preservation, architecture, and politics. The conference provides a unique look at how cities can approach the challenges of preserving historic character while balancing sustainability, affordability, and diversity.
Registration is $85 for adults and $35 for students with ID. Fees include a continental breakfast, lunch, and reception. Registration is required. We invite you to join us for this conversation bringing together voices from historic preservation and affordable housing to consider our historic multi-family housing and its place in our communities. Register online<http://shop.historicnewengland.org/HH-SYMPOSIUM-10909/> or by calling 617-994-6678.
