Jane,

Thank you for your response. Clearly you, Kevin Cornacchio and the Salem CPC have developed a well-researched and well-articulated position paper on Tree census and maintenance that Hopkinton can use for our work.

In essence my interpretation of your position is if there are trees on "Historically significant" sites where the tree(s) support the significance which might be the case for some of the Oaks or if the tree has a "history" whereby an event happened on or about the tree or the tree was part of a stand of trees planted by the King's representative, then they may be eligible for survey / maintenance funding.

I hope I've interpreted this correctly?

After consulting with the Community Preservation Coalition, attached is a letter that we sent to the City Council in response to their inquiry to use CPA for trees. It does not address a city-wide survey specifically, but does address the maintenance.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Tree survey

A concerned citizen in town has asked the Historical Commission to support a tree survey for specific Oak trees that may be 200 years old including a hemlock that was in a "King's stand" that has been purported to have trees harvested for sailing ships prior to 1776.

The HHC debated whether this work or subsequent tree maintenance work could be eligible for CPA funds. Has anyone done anything similar?
