The City of Newton has a Local Landmark Ordinance, dating to 1993, which
enables the historical commission to protect individual " buildings,
structures, landscapes, and places, which define the historic character of
the city and have, over time, helped to establish a sense of place." This
designation can provide the same level of review and protection from
demolition as for structures within LHDs.
Currently Newton has 22 buildings designated as Local Landmarks, a wide
variety dating from the 17th century to the mid-20th century. Some are
residential, some are churches and others are commercial or civic
buildings. There are many more that are at risk.
We would like to learn from other towns and cities, if you have a similar
Local Landmark ordinance, and if so what has been the experience and how
many buildings in your town are protected in this way.
