I suggest contacting Jeffrey Shrimpton, Cultural Resources Supervisor, Massachusetts Department of Transportation -- Highway Division Environmental Services, or someone in this department
(857) 368-8824
jeffrey.shrimpton at state.ma.us
Mr. Shrimpton's division handles reviews for compliance with National Historic Preservation Act and other environmental requirements and may have design suggestions.

Subject: [MassHistPres] Historic Wayside Inn bridge repairs

Hello,

The bridge at the Wayside Inn in Sudbury was run into by a car and has to be replaced. New Mass DOT standards are a nightmare—metal guardrails, fabricated siding, etc. Although in a hurry to get work started, our DPW is open to alternatives. We have discovered that nationwide this is not an uncommon problem and have found some possibilities on the internet—(massive) wood guard rails, DOT approved bridge walls with stone or simulated stone veneer, but there are problems that our DPW isn’t sure about. E.g., securing the guardrails to bridge walls. Does anyone have any experience or a success story with something like this, in Mass or anywhere?

Thank you.

Fred Taylor
