[MassHistPres] Demolition Delay Successes

Chris -

Not exactly what you're looking for, but Easton had a real success lately with a demolition review application that never happened.

The owner of an 1870s house and attached barn on a prominent corner in Easton Center (a part of town recommended as eligible for listing on the National Register, although not formally nominated / listed), wanted to demolish the property and build a new single-family home and was concerned with the likely time-line of demolition review.

Knowledgeable local residents worked with the owner on a different idea - apply for a special permit to make it a two-family property, rehabilitate the main house and the barn, and create appropriate additions to the rear and sides.

The proposal moved forward and the work is nearing completion. The original 1870s house and barn have been retained and the property remains reasonably legible in its historic use and appearance.

It's not an exact restoration but rather a fairly successful renovation that broadly preserves the property's integrity - all without a demolition review application ever being filed.

I've included Google 2012 street-view snaps and current photos from similar angles, below.

Thanks,

Wayne

I could use some additional examples of demolition delay successes. The administering demolition delay MHC regional workshop presentation includes successes from Boston, Eastham, Easton Reading, Springfield and Worcester. Please let me know if you think you have a demolition delay success that other communities might find useful. Chris.
