[MassHistPres] Steeplejacks

Southgate Steeplejacks in Barre Vermont did a fantastic restoration of the steeple on an 1827 church in the Newton Upper Falls Historic District. They used historic photographs and evidence from the structure to recreate lost details, restored the weathervane and bell. They received a Newton Preservation Award for the project. The church is located at 15 Summer Street in Newton Upper Falls if you want to take a look.

We’re working on a church in Woburn which has serious need for repair and restoration of its masonry and wood steeple.  We’re interested in speaking with experienced steeplejacks about how to best approach the work.

Good Afternoon,



The Town of Concord Historical Commission will be submitting a warrant article to amend their Demolition Review Bylaw this year. We are looking for towns who have recently adopted or amended their demo bylaw with similar elements.



The three proposed amendments include:



  *   Changing the [bylaw trigger] date from “built before 1941” to “50 years or older”



  *   Changing the definition of “historically significant” to include a section for a finding that a structure is:
     *   associated with one or more historic persons or events, or with the architectural, cultural, political, economic or social history of the Town of Concord, the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or the United States of America; and/or,
     *   is historically or architecturally important by reason of period, style, method of building construction or association with a particular architect or builder, either by itself or in the context of a group of buildings or structures.
     *   located within one hundred fifty (150) feet of the boundary line of any federal or local historic district and is similar architecturally to the buildings or structures located in the district; and/or in historic use; and/or the historic landscape of the district.



  *   Changing the delay period to start from the date the preferably preserved determination is made, instead of from the date the application is received.



If your bylaw currently contains these elements or you have recently made similar amendments to your demo bylaw we would love to know! I’m hoping to compile a list of towns my Commission members can reach out to in the near future to help bolster our defense for Town Meeting.
