[MassHistPres] Billboards

The town of Hopkinton has had two billboards that were set back on the edge of woods fronted by what once was a pasture. A new development is proposing to demolish these billboards but the Planning board is asking if these are protected structures. While the frame may actually be eligible (75+ year old) I’m not sure this meets the historically significant eligibility requirement or if there are any precedents in Ma. (other than the Citgo sign).
Has anyone tried to protect commercial signage?
