Greetings, Does anyone have experience with delisting a property or district from the National Register of Historic Places? The Massachusetts Historical Commission has told me is a difficult, time consuming, and expensive process and they do not have the staff time nor the resources to devote to removing properties from the National Register in response to any situation, including following loss or other destruction.
But according to federal regulations, there is a clearly defined process to delist properties from the National Register and "no person shall be considered to have exhausted administrative remedies with respect to removal of a property from the National Register until the Keeper has denied a petition for removal pursuant to this section."
My request for delisting comes on the heels of two key buildings being demolished in a small NR District in Beverly. The story was covered in The Salem News yesterday (8-11) and can be found here: https://www.salemnews.com/news/local_news/despite-demolitions-district-remains-historic/article_ca3c46e3-093f-5da1-b9b1-31e2c7470ddf.html
