Alex,
The Preservation Trust of Vermont has an excellent answer to your question:
https://ptvermont.org/gutter-talk/
J.P Moriarty (Somerville) has a great website with the history and
technical information about wooden gutters:
http://woodgutters.net/technical_information/technical_information.html
Riverside Sheet Metal (Medford) fabricates and sells copper liners that can
be installed and soldered together in the trough:
https://www.riversidesheetmetal.net/gutters/liner/
All gutters require maintenance, but wooden gutters more so still. The
typical homeowner does not do an adequate job of inspecting, cleaning and
maintaining their gutters. We always recommend lining new wooden gutters
with sheet metal. Also, it's a good way to prolong the useful service life
of existing gutters.
