Hello all,
I wanted to highlight three networks of historic sites and programs that the National Park Service manages. These thematic networks are designed to raise awareness of sites and increase connectivity and knowledge around the various themes. These networks are open to all properties, facilities, and programs that relate to their theme, public or private, not just those managed by the Park Service. While some of the networks do require National Register listing or eligibility, some of them do not; programs, websites, and lesson plans are also frequently eligible. Some of these networks have grant funding available while others offer technical assistance to their sites. Please share with your networks and local sites that might benefit from connection with these national programs.
Thank you,
Jenn

These networks are not managed by MHC. Please reach out to them individually with questions.

National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom
"Through its mission, the Network to Freedom helps to advance the idea that all human beings embrace the right to self-determination and freedom from oppression. The program is a catalyst for innovation, partnerships, and scholarship that connects and shares the diverse legacy of the Underground Railroad across boundaries and generations."

The National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom includes sites with a verifiable connection to the Underground Railroad; facilities with materials that highlight the stories of the Underground Railroad, such as libraries or research centers; and programs that provide information on the Underground Railroad. Requirements and application materials vary for the three different categories. The network currently includes over 695 locations across the United States.

Reconstruction Era National Historic Network
This second network focuses on the Reconstruction era, sites dating from 1861 to 1900. It helps to "preserve locations and stories that tell the story of this crucial transition from slavery to freedom in the aftermath of Civil War." Sites must be listed on or eligible for the National Register of Historic Places and have an educational, research, or interpretive component.

African American Civil Rights Network
This network commemorates, honors, and interprets "the history of the African American Civil Rights movement; the significance of the civil rights movement as a crucial element in the evolution of the Civil Rights Act of 1964; and the relevance of the African American Civil Rights movement in fostering the spirit of social justice and national reconciliation." While this network does not have a set date range, it is focused on any properties, facilities, or programs that relate to the African American struggle for Civil Rights.
