One of the earliest industrial canals in North America was created in
Dedham, starting in 1639, by settlers who leveraged the difference in
elevation between the Charles River and a tributary of the Neponset River
to the east. Now known as the Mother Brook, this corridor includes a
significant collection of historic mill buildings, industrial
infrastructure, and company-built housing. The four mill privileges created
here served as the economic engine of Dedham for 300 years, and the
residents would like this part of town history to receive wider recognition.
Consultants, town volunteers and staff have been working for several years
to prepare documentation, and the effort is approaching its final phase
after receiving approval from MHC.
We are seeking a historic preservation consultant to prepare a National
Register nomination for advancing this district to listing on the National
Register.
