[MassHistPres] Roof types

In administering Cambridge's historic districts we stayed strong for three-tabs until just last week, when the Commission approved a roof replacement with architectural shingles. The Commission took this step based mainly on product quality (although the evidence is mostly anecdotal) but also on contractor and owner preferences. The relatively subdued patten and appearance of Certaineed's Landmark Pro line was considered to be more appropriate than some others.

The Commission also understood that three-tabs were not introduced until the early 20th century, and our preference for them today may be based more on familiarity than their appropriateness for older buildings.

Good Morning,

Happy Election Day!

I am curious on what other historic districts guidance is for asphalt roof - the "3 tab vs. Architectural" debate.
Any info you could share, would be most appreciated.

Thanks in advance!
