Dear friends,

It’s with great sadness and on behalf of all of us at the Massachusetts Historical Commission that I write to the masshistpres community to let you know of the passing this past Saturday of our dear friend and colleague Betsy Friedberg, the recently retired, long time National Register Director at the MHC.  In her 37 years on the staff of the Commission, Betsy shepherded many thousands of Massachusetts properties into the National Register of Historic Places for honor, recognition, and access to restoration and rehabilitation funds.  Her work directly supported and shaped the efforts local historical commissions, advocates, property owners, and many others across the Commonwealth to acknowledge, protect and preserve the historic places that give meaning to and define the character of our communities, large and small, from all eras, and representing our diverse and many faceted past.  I know many of you had the opportunity to work with Betsy over the years.  She will be greatly missed.
