Janice
I wouldn't use an imitation product. Good cedar roof shingles are still available and make a good choice for a historic roof. Look for Western Red Cedar. I did a new historic wood shingle roof in NJ about 8 years ago on a historic school, using historic preservation grant money that required work in accordance with the Secretary of the Interior Standards. We met all these standards and also current building codes, and the roof looks great today. To begin your search for a good roofer and exact roofing shingle or shake, try the Cedar Shake and Shingle Bureau at https://www.cedarbureau.org/ . They are a trade association of members in the cedar shake and shingle industry and incredibly helpful. The person to begin with is

Good Day,
We are looking into alternatives (Dept of Interior acceptable) for the roof on our 1877 Schoolhouse on the Lower Green in Newbury, MA.
Has anyone used non-wooden roof shingles? We are concerned about the lack of old growth, wooden shingles. Do you have a reliable source to purchase?
Any assistance would be appreciated.
Thank you, JaniceJanice Forrest, Secretary/ClerkNEWBURY HISTORICAL COMMISSION12 Kent WayByfield, MA 01922historicalcomm at townofnewbury.org
