Dear All,

In Stowe, Vermont in the early 1970’s, the old Stowe High School was going to be demolished and perhaps replaced with a ranch style library. Now, the Helen Day Memorial Library and Art Center is in the restored old school. We found a purpose, succeeded in getting the Helen Day Montanari trustees to allocate their money to a restored building, formed the non-profit Historic Stowe, Inc, raised matching money, and oversaw the restoration. <https://www.vermontwoman.com/articles/2014/0914/helenday/helen-day.html> https://www.vermontwoman.com/articles/2014/0914/helenday/helen-day.html

Hi Janice

We had the same situation an old neglected historic schoolhouse. Left vacant and no upkeep by the town for 20+ years. We formed a non profit, attempted to do a rehab with a program to make it self sustaining financially through a CPA project. But the finance committee and a few on BOS turned us down and it lost by 6 votes at town meeting. So we were told form another non profit and we will put it out for sale using an RFP with historic restrictions included. We did so. In the end the BOS changed and all they wanted was up front cash in total and use as housing. We came very close.

Good luck to you and thank you for trying

Good Day,

I am asking if anyone has had experience in trying to save a town owned building, that is being neglected so it can be torn down. We have a DDB and the building is part of our only NRD. I realize that the NRD doesn't prevent this. I looking for a path to fight this, if possible.

Thanks, Janice
