Dennis,
There are a few different ways to attach solar panels to a slate roof and a
sensible slate roofer will be able to fix anything if solar panels (or
roof) need to be fixed. Both a slate roof and solar panels can be fixed
individually if either fail / need to be replaced. Once there are panels on
top of the primary roof material it will take more time and energy to
figure out and fix any problems.
Once solar is on a building I doubt there will come a time when the solar
needs to be totally replaced. There may be times when the slate or flashing
points need attention.
Standing seam metal is a much better substrate for solar, better than slate
or asphalt and definitely better than a wood roof.
