Doors Open Lowell, being presented for the 19th time, and the first time since 2019, is this weekend so don’t miss your chance to discover some great historic buildings and architecture as you help celebrate National Preservation Month. In 2002, Lowell was the first city in the United States to launch this prestigious event dedicated to built heritage, architecture, and design.
With 19 buildings open for viewing, there’s something for everyone along with a variety of other activities.

Get Something XTRA Out of Doors Open Lowell
Doors Open XTRAs are special opportunities to enhance your Doors Open Lowell experience through special tours, demonstrations, and interactions with design professionals. Among our XTRAs this year are special organ and bell ringing demonstrations at St. Patrick’s Church and a chance to learn more about the 1930s era murals inside UMass Lowell’s Coburn Hall with professor Marie Frank.
For a complete list of Doors Open XTRAs, head HERE<https://engage.squarespace-mail.com/r?m=6646528bd11bb33409f4600c&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.doorsopenlowell.org%2Ftake-action%3Fss_source%3Dsscampaigns%26ss_campaign_id%3D6643f38ec07bb95f461fb03a%26ss_email_id%3D6646528bd11bb33409f4600c%26ss_campaign_name%3DDoors%2BOpen%2BLowell%2BThis%2BWeekend%2B-%2BSaturday%252C%2BMay%2B18%26ss_campaign_sent_date%3D2024-05-16T18%253A38%253A18Z&w=587e713f6a496344c84f31d7&c=b_6643f38ec07bb95f461fb03a&l=en-US&s=U9Skmq5DebPwLxh5qLA7YE4eqFU%3D>.

Schedule Updates!
Please note that the Doors Open XTRA in the program guide at the Lowell National Historical Park's Kirk Street Agent's House from 11-noon Saturday has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances. However, we're hopeful that at some point in June, the National Park will host a similar event at the site as the work being undertaken there is very interesting.
In addition, we wanted to alert people visiting the Pollard Memorial Library that their elevator is broken and will not be available for use from 1-4 in the afternoon. The upper floors will be accessible only by stairs. However, they have put together an outstanding self-guided program and you can also use it as an opportunity to get extra steps in!
We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.
Underground Lowell
What looks like a modern building on the outside is actually an exciting blend of old and new. Be sure to stop by the Tremont Yard building, home to Jeanne D’Arc Credit Union’s headquarters, between 1 and 4 where you’ll discover mid-19th century waterpower features in the basement. A Doors Open XTRA will allow you to learn more about the site with former Lowell National Historical Park ranger Dave Redding. Historic stone, brick and metal tunnels, chutes, and chambers await (but don’t worry, you won’t get wet!).

Originally the Tremont Mills Powerhouse and Mill No. 2 (ca. 1840s and 1862), many millyard buildings were demolished by the 1930s and this building was razed to a single story but continued to house hydroelectric turbines for several decades. The site is significant for its association with engineer James B. Francis, his role in pioneering turbine experiments of 1855, and the history of subsequent turbine technology.

Shuttle Bus Saturday Afternoon
Don’t forget that we’ll have a shuttle bus providing transportation to various stops Saturday afternoon from 1-4pm. Catch it at the Lowell National Historical Park Visitor Center on Market Street, Tremont Yard, Spalding House, Coburn Hall, and Transfiguration Greek Orthodox Church.
Just look for the signs at each stop and the bus runs on a revolving basis, approximately every 20 minutes depending upon traffic.
X Marks the Spot
Well not quite a “x” but while you’re out and about during Doors Open Lowell, be sure to check out the Lowell Historic Board’s various Downtown Lowell Historic District building markers. Look for them as you head from site to site as 44 buildings currently have them installed downtown.
To discover more about the building markers, head HERE<https://engage.squarespace-mail.com/r?m=6646528bd11bb33409f4600c&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.lowellma.gov%2F990%2FDowntown-Lowell-Historic-District-Buildi&w=587e713f6a496344c84f31d7&c=b_6643f38ec07bb95f461fb03a&l=en-US&s=057mI5Q_C1Q01sxtxINNmcyjlQc%3D> for a guide and map.

Special Thanks to Our Supporters
Doors Open Lowell would not be possible without the support of many dedicated people. On behalf of those who enjoy the event, we would like to extend a special thank you. And of course the event would not be possible without the support and access provided by the many owners and tenants who graciously open their buildings to the public.
