The Topsfield Historical Society has an opening for a Resident Caretaker/rental at our historic property on Howlett Street. Housing for the RC is in an on site “Cottage" --a lovely, 15 year old, architect-designed, green building, set back from the street with parking. See below for picture and floor plans.

In addition to the Cottage, the Society grounds contain the 1683 Parson Capen House, the 1710 Gould Barn, a reproduction cobbler shop and a period herb garden.

Our ideal RC would be an individual or couple who are looking for a residence in Topsfield, and who have an interest in history and/or historic buildings. An RC's tenancy could involve helping THS with various duties subject to their skills and interests and would be a key member of the Society, reporting to the Chair of Buildings & Grounds. Depending on the skill and interest of the individual(s) this role will involve a range of building and grounds tasks such as monitoring pests, HVAC, alarms, flower and herb garden care, snow removal, contractor and IT issues and rental event support and other operational functions delineated in a signed agreement.

If the candidate is a museum professional, curatorial and programmatic support may also factor into agreement.

About the Topsfield Historical Society
The Society is a private nonprofit organization, with a mission to collect, preserve, maintain, study and exhibit historical materials relating to the Town of Topsfield; to preserve and maintain the Parson Capen House, the Captain Joseph Gould Barn and any other historic structures that may be acquired by the Society; to encourage the study of Natural history in its various forms; and to engage in multi-generational outreach that connects the community with the town’s history in ways relevant to the current culture and interests.

In 1915, we acquired the National Historic Landmark 1683 Parson Capen House and continue to maintain it as a house museum open the public for tours by appointment and seasonal programming. In 1995 the Society reconstructed the 1710 Joseph Gould Barn which is now run as a Society program and event rental space and houses the Society’s archival collections. There is a reproduction shoe shop and enclosed herb garden.

If you are interested please reach out and also if have ideas of where to “advertise” this opportunity as well as pass along!

Thank you,
