Hi Henry

I was involved in saving historic cast aluminum street name signs from a prior DPW zealots mis-reading the MUTCD. Together with Lower Marion Township Pa. and two senators across party lines we got Federal rulemaking to clarify their historic status. I assume you do not have such a drastic challenge.

This book on turnpikes may be also tangential to your issue but may be of some interest.

I take it your structure is wood. Do you know how old it is? It has a wonderful Ur-ish appearance.
Here is a thought for whatever it may be worth — or may not be — given its extremely exposed and fragile nature, like Michelangelo’s David, might the original go in a museum with an exact replica in the town green.

My interest in Brookline’s signs spilled over a bit into related wayfinding signs such as yours and mileposts as well.

Here are a few Mass. examples

Cast aluminum wayfinding in Acton — combined with horse trough and a light!

A CPA grant funding application for very unusual street name signs in Longmeadow

I have seen a few of these distinctive town line signs in various places and wonder if there may have been a depression era program

Cast iron wayfinding in Hamilton

It would be interesting to have a state wide inventory of such historic street name and wayfinding road signage — including mileposts

> I wondered if anyone had experience protecting an approximately 6 foot, 3-dimensional road sign considered a historical landmark from water, snow damage. The 19th century structure on Shutesbury common is being rehabilitated and we want to protect it.
