The Cathedral and the Bazaar
Read the original version of
The
Cathedral and the Bazaar.
Write a few paragraphs about your reactions to Raymond's essay.
Don't
just summarize what he has to say. I want to hear about how you
connect, or don't, to the points he makes. Here are a few possible
topics that occurred to me in my rereading. You can respond to these,
or to others that occur to you. I hope your thoughts (written down in
advance) will lead to lively discussion in class.
-
Raymond refers repeatedly to Brooks' Mythical Man Month, which we
read last semester. That is ancient history in the annals of software
development. What do you think of Raymond's take on Brooks?
Is Raymond's essay ancient history too?
-
Which (if any) of Raymond's arguments are relevant for the tiny
projects we're doing in this course?
- What do you think Joel Spolsky might think about The
Cathedral and the Bazaar?
- CATB has generated lots of commentary Raymond has posted at
catb.org/esr/writings/homesteading/.
You might be tempted to read some of it, or some of his other papers,
even though I didn't assign them.
