Class 9 – Tuesday, October 1, 2013

First exam. 19 present, one ‘flu accounted for. I wonder who’s missing.

I tried to make the exam short enough. I hope I succeeded.

Watching student screens. I do see them using the google search to make calculations – better than mousing on calculator image. I do wish one of the students could do “4000 times 4 million” in his/her head.

Someone seems to be using Word’s equation editor. I wonder why … Now checking meaning of “yotta” — in fact that’s given them in the exam. Now on to the Google calculator (took a while to find it), asking for 500 quintillion * 4000 and getting 2e+24 for an answer. I didn’t cover that! Now asking “how many characters fit on a Microsoft Word page”, which is a pretty good query, though I’d have preferred a Fermi estimate. This does mean, though, that this person is working on the last question, with just under half the time elapsed.

Another student has a Yahoo answers page up on how to compute the absolute and relative change.

… ten minutes left. Four students are done (or think they are). I had to remind each to take the exam questions home, since they get to rework problems. They’d have known that if they read (and remembered) the instructions, which I gave them five points for. One student said she didn’t need the exam because it was posted. Hooray.

Exam’s over now.

Here is a link to it.
