Understanding the consequences of false positives.

The class worked several of the  previously unassigned exercises – and I discovered that they are routinely too hard. The important numbers are all there (most of the time) but very hard to dig out of complex prose. Here’s my quandary. If I parse the paragraphs for them and break the exercise down into small steps, more of them will be able to get reasonable answers. But when they encounter similar difficulties (long) after the course is over, they will have to parse the paragraphs themselves …

I’ll write about this in the instructor’s manual and in the text – probably provide some of the small steps in hints.
