Walk The Trail:

Quincy Salt Marsh Trail - Stop 10

Multiflora RoseRosa multiflora

This Asian species of rose, with its dense sprays of small white or pinkish flowers, was introduced to America over a century ago for use as an ornamental shrub. It was later planted for its value as shelter and food for wildlife, and along highways as a way to reduce the glare of headlights. Birds have developed a taste for its bright red rosehips which has led to its spread into many natural areas throughout the U.S.

You can find Multiflora Rose blossoming along the upper border of the marsh in late spring. Its graceful, arching stems are covered with curved thorns that make it difficult to navigate through, and also difficult to remove.
