IT 116: Introduction to Scripting
Class 10 Exercise

Practice in interactive mode

Run Idle on your machine
```
python3
```

Use the for loop with a list

>>> for fruit in ["apple", "peach", "blueberry", "watermelon"]:
...    print(fruit)
...

Practice with the range function

>>> for number in range(5):
...    print(number, end=', ')
...
>>> for number in (1, 6):
...    print(number, end=', ')
...
>>> for number in (1, 6, 2):
...    print(number, end=', ')
...
>>> for number in (5, 0, -1):
...    print(number, end=', ')
...

Script for this exercise

Open a text editor
A program like Sublime.
Do not use Word or Notepad.
Copy the text below into the file

Save the file as ex10.py
Run this script in IDLE
Open the script file in IDLE. Under the Run menu, select Run Module.

You should see

apple
peach
blueberry
watermelon

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
1, 3, 5, 7, 9,
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,

Unix Setup

Log in to users3.cs.umb.edu
You will be in your home directory.
Go to your it116 directory
```
cd it116
```
Go to your ex directory
```
cd ex
```
Create a directory for this exercise
```
mkdir  ex10
```
Check that the directory was created
```
ls
```

Copy the file to Unix

Open FileZilla and connect to users3.cs.umb.edu
You will have to connect using your Unix username and password.
Copy the file to the to it116/ex/ex10

Testing the script on Unix

Connect to users3.cs.umb.edu
Use an ssh client.
Go to the directory for this exercise
```
cd  it116/ex/ex10
```
Run this script
```
python3 ex10.py
```

You should see

apple
peach
blueberry
watermelon

0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9,
1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10,
1, 3, 5, 7, 9,
10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,

Running my test script on your script

If you want to run my text script on your Class Exercise script do the following
Run ex10.sh on your script
```
~ghoffman/it116_test/ex10.sh
```
The script will prompt you for your Unix username.
