[MassHistPres] Artifact preservation

After exposing a beam in my 1670 home, I found quite a bit of old newspaper 
adhered to the main beam.  A segment reveals the date as November 20, 1820. 
What is the best way to preserve this? How can I remove it without 
destroying it or should I just leave it there --covered or uncovered?
