For sources of iron, you can check with the rangers at Saugus Iron Works, National Historic Site.  Also Robert Gordon, Dept. of Geology and Geophysics, Yale University; he is a scholar of early iron technology ("American Iron, 1607-1900") and has worked on the Salisbury district in CT.
