There is a Greek revival style house in Chatham, in bad condition, which is in danger of being demolished. It was built at the end of the 19th century, has lovely lines, and is part of a streetscape lined with historic homes.
Among many other concerns – a leaking roof, ceilings that are falling down -there may be a serious problem with mold in the walls and the ceilings. I’ve been told that once mold gets into the beams, it’s impossible to get out. Of course, the owner, who is one of the Town’s largest developers, wants to tear it down, and, since it is on almost three acres in a Residential 60 (60,000 square feet) district, it could be replaced with more than one trendy reproduction, which will destroy the historic character of the neighborhood. The house is subject to a one year demolition delay.
Do we give up on it, or can anyone help us with information on how to go about saving it?
Thanks for whatever assistance you can offer.
